The Crawford School Alumni Dialogue in Phnom Penh brought together graduates, policy professionals, and friends of the School for an evening of conversation, reflection, and connection.
The event featured a keynote address by Ms Sophoan Phean, Director of Oxfam Cambodia, who spoke about the importance of inclusive and evidence-based policymaking in Cambodia. Drawing on her experience, she emphasised that policy must reflect the realities of those most affected. She told attendees:
“As someone who believes in accommodating gender equality and social inclusion, I believe our policy must include the reality of those most impacted. We must listen more, engage wider and design systems that leave no one behind.”
Ms Phean encouraged alumni to be bold in their approaches, to rely on evidence, and to consider the ethical and moral dimensions of policy decisions in order to make a tangible difference in communities. She also shared her gratitude to Crawford School for fostering lasting connections among alumni.
The evening began with opening remarks from Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Mr Derek Yip, who reflected on the contributions of Cambodian Crawford School alumni:
“Australian Award scholars and many other Cambodian graduates of the Crawford School have returned home to become Cambodia’s leaders and change makers, including many of you here tonight.”
Following the keynote, a panel discussion moderated by Associate Professor Keith Barney brought together H.E. Ung Luyna, Director General of the General Department of Policy, Ministry of Economics and Finance; Mr Sophornreaksmey Sreng, Deputy Secretary General, National Social Protection Council, Ministry of Economy and Finance; and Ms Soksophea Suong, Board Director of the Women Network for Unity and Lecturer/Researcher at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. The discussion provided insights into key policy challenges in Cambodia today and highlighted the diverse experiences of alumni working across government, community organisations, and research.
The evening offered an opportunity for alumni to reconnect, share experiences, and strengthen the sense of community that continues to define the Crawford School network in the region.
