It is with deep sadness that I acknowledge the passing of a great friend, outstanding co-author, and brilliant economist, Professor Andrew B. Stoeckel, on 22 December 2025, after a brave battle with cancer. Andy has been an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University's Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis (CAMA) since 2008. He was also Chief Economist (part-time) at the NSW Department of the Premier’s Centre for Economic and Regional Development. He was the founding chairman of The Centre for International Economics (The CIE), which he established in 1986 with Dr Sandy Cuthbertson and later Dr David Vincent.

Andy was an outstanding economist who had a significant impact on Australian economic policy over many decades, particularly on the importance of international trade and understanding emerging global economic issues. We published more than 30 co-authored papers, and Andy was still developing ideas for our next papers on global risk and the potential for another financial crisis. Andy’s energy and excitement about the importance of promoting free and open trade were infectious. He was generous with his time, providing feedback to CAMA PhD students and colleagues.

Andy’s passing is a significant loss to his family and friends, and more broadly to the economic and policy communities. He has left a lasting legacy on the importance of rigorous economic analysis for policy evaluation and the need to never stop advocating for the benefits of free and open trade.
