A timely dialogue on Australia-China decarbonisation and green industry opportunities

As China continues to reshape its domestic energy system, industrial policy and climate strategy, understanding its internal drivers, constraints, and outlook is vital for Australian decision makers. The Centre for Climate and Energy Policy (CCEP) at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy is hosting a series of roundtables and discussions focused on China’s energy, industrial, and climate policy outlook.
These dialogues connect leading Chinese academic experts with Australian researchers and policy stakeholders to explore the critical dynamics of China’s low-carbon transition. They aim to deepen mutual understanding of the trends shaping China’s decarbonisation and their implications and opportunities for Australia, particularly in energy, resources, trade, finance, and diplomacy.
Prof Zhang Xiliang and Ass. Prof Weng Yuyan from Tsinghua University and A/Prof Tony Tang from Fudan University joined us from Beijing and Shanghai in late July 2025, soon after the Prime Minister’s visit to China where there was strong emphasis on bilateral opportunities in decarbonisation.
The visit is supported by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (NFACR) and ties into CCEP’s ongoing research into the future of green steel and low-carbon industrial supply chains between China and Australia.
This initiative is part of CCEP’s broader research on green industrial supply chains, including the Green Steel Supply Chain Futures project, we are working to identify how Australia can position itself as a key supplier of green industrial inputs — like green iron — to China and other east Asian economies as they decarbonise.
