Crawford School hosts vibrant conference on Vietnam's future

Last Friday, we concluded the year on a high note with the Vietnam Policy and Economy Update 2024. This one-day conference was co-organised by the Crawford School's Hub for Vietnam Policy Studies and Vietnam's National Economics University, with support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The event brought together over 120 guests, including 30 Crawford School alumni, alongside policymakers, academics, and experts, creating a vibrant space for intergenerational dialogue on Vietnam’s institutional and economic reforms, macroeconomic outlook, climate change adaptation, and social policy challenges.
The conference commenced with inspiring remarks from our distinguished speakers, highlighting the dynamic relationship between Australia and Vietnam, its newest comprehensive strategic partner in Southeast Asia:
▪️ Professor Helen Sullivan – Dean of the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific
▪️ Ms Robyn Mudie – First Assistant Secretary, Office of Southeast Asia, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
▪️ H.E. Mr Pham Hung Tam – Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Australia
▪️ Professor Pham Hong Chuong – President, Vietnam's National Economics University
The program featured two keynote sessions that provided in-depth perspectives on Vietnam's future. The Plenary Political and Policy Update explored "Vietnam's Coming Era of Rising - Seven Strategic Directions," presented by Professor Anh Tran Ngoc from Indiana University. The Plenary Economic Reform Update covered "Vietnam's Economic Restructuring: Current Situation and Prospects," delivered by Dr Duc-Anh Dang, Vice President of Vietnam’s Central Institute for Economic Management.
Parallel thematic updates offered in-depth perspectives on key issues, including macroeconomics, trade and environment, firms and industries, and social challenges.
In addition to the engaging discussions, attendees enjoyed traditional Vietnamese music and a tea-tasting session, offering a cultural highlight and a chance to unwind and reflect on the day.
