Join us for the book launch of ‘Gender and Development: Perspectives from Australia and the Pacific’.

This book brings together the work of twenty-five contemporary scholars and practitioners working on Gender and Development with unique insights as to the successes and limitations of Gender and Development in our current era.

This book launch will be an excellent opportunity to hear from keynote speaker and feminist luminary, Virisila Buadromo, Co-Lead at Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights – Asia & Pacific, who will present at the launch.

We will also hear from esteemed book authors, including Professor Barbara Pampilon AM from the University of Canberra and Yeva Avakyan, former Associate Vice President of Save the Children US, alongside Australian National University authors such as Associate Professor Sonia Palmieri (former Head of the Department of Pacific Affairs), Dr Elise Stephenson (Deputy Director of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership), Professor Sharon Bessell (Director of the Children’s Policy Centre) and Dr Annabel Dulhunty (Deputy SARI Director).

This launch will be to discuss this new edited book which critically examines if and how Gender and Development can address the contemporary challenges of the 21st century, focusing on the perspectives of scholars and practitioners from Australia and the Pacific. While Gender and Development has been highly influential, it is not without criticism. Gender and Development has been critiqued for giving insufficient attention to intersectionality and the racial and colonial dimensions of 'development', as well as issues of sexuality and sexual diversity. This book ties together current theory and specific case studies, to showcase how Gender and Development has been practiced in the region and how it can be further developed and improved.
