Cedric will present the culmination of work from his PhD on the economic impacts of declining demand for Australia's coal and gas.

This work examines the economic impacts of declining demand for Australia's coal and gas. It develops a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model of the Australian economy that includes fossil fuel producing sectors and workers with a novel introduction of occupational similarity data to calibrate labour market behaviour. We use this model to demonstrate the potential impact of a negative shock to fossil fuel demand that is consistent with announced climate policies of major trading partners. The work tests the role industry support; improved labour market flexibility; targeted re-training programmes; and potential increases in foreign demand for green industries play in offsetting this impact. It also examines the importance of assumptions regarding agents' foresight.
