Abstract

What is the evidence for changes in the distribution of individual wealth in Indonesia? Many publications analysed trends in inequality in Indonesia based on the outcomes of the Susenas and IFLS household survey data, which are marred by significant underreporting in the high income and wealth brackets and therefore underestimate inequality. This paper analyses listings of Indonesia’s wealthiest. It concludes that the aggregated wealth of the richest in Indonesian society increased faster than economic growth since 2005, which suggests a significant increase in wealth inequality. It establishes that this concentration of wealth in Indonesia exceeds that of the 1930s by far. It also finds that Indonesia’s wealth inequality was until 2020 lower than in countries with very high Gini indices of income inequality, such as India and China, until it started to exceed the levels of wealth inequality in those countries.”
