Abstract
The administration of President Prabowo Subianto has derived its goal to achieve an eight-percent growth target into several strategies: active and increasing roles of state-led capitalism, expansive fiscal measures, and unconventional monetary interventions. Despite the well-meaning intention and broad function to boost aggregate demand, we show how the design and implementation of these policies may backfire and create more distortions preventing the economy from growing optimally. We argue that the administration’s chosen remedies coupled with the lack of attention to tackling real problems that limit productivity growth to worsen resource misallocation problems, creating a wider gap to the 8-percent growth ambition.
