On 10 July 2012, the China Economy Program within the Crawford School, in collaboration with the Rio Tinto-ANU China Partnership, will present the twelfth China Update. Leading academics, policy makers and government representatives will discuss the latest research on the Chinese economy. Over the years, the China Update has cemented its status as Australia’s premier forum for in-depth discussion and analysis of the Chinese economy.

The 2012 China Update will coincide with the launch of Rebalancing and Sustaining Growth in China, edited by Ligang Song and Huw McKay. The book is published by ANU E Press with the Chinese Social Sciences Academic Press publishing the Chinese language version.

This year’s China Update brings together world leading experts from the United States, China and Australia to discuss the two major policy challenges presently face the Chinese government: how to rebalance and sustain growth.

This event is an annual occurrence at the ANU and is not to be missed! This year’s opening address will be provided by The Hon Dr Craig Emerson MP, Australia’s Minister for Trade, who will speak about the increasing importance and evolving nature of Australia’s relationship with China. The closing address will be given by Professor Selahattin Imrohoroglu, Academic Director, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California who will speak about the implications of demographic transition on long term growth.

This year’s Update will address the following topics:

> Rebalancing Economic Growth in China: the Significance, Requirements and Impact

> A View of China in the World: Chinese Trade, Investment and Resource Security

> China’s Inequality and its Labour Market: A review of Chinese Education, Migration and Demographic Transition

The Update will conclude with a final discussion panel on China’s future challenges and opportunities chaired by Emeritus Professor Peter Drysdale AO and comprised of:

> Professor Cai Fang, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

> Winthrop Professor Peter Robertson, University of Western Australia

> Dr James Laurenceson, University of Queensland

> Professor Wing Thye Woo, University of California, Davis

> Mr Zhao Jianfei, Caixin Media
