Natural resource management and biosecurity is an increasingly important part of government policy decision-making. Biosecurity, in particular, provides an essential protection against invasive threats, protecting human, animal and plant health as well as the environment. The focus of Conference Day 1 is on the economics of biosecurity and environmental economics, with an emphasis on work on containment and eradication measures, optimal local surveillance, environmental valuation, cost-benefit analysis, bioeconomic modelling, and natural resource management and marine reserve design.

The goal of the Environment & Economics 2011 Conference is to address Australia’s major environmental management challenges with integrated economic research that provides immediate and continuing policy impacts. The conference will bring together leading economists, scientists, educators and policy makers in the areas of Biosecurity and Environmental Economics, Water, and Climate Change.

Environmental issues are vital and affect the lifestyle and economy of Australia. One significant aim of the Conference is that the discussion among presenters and attending policy makers will make a positive contribution to the debate on these key issues facing the country. Guest speakers at Environment & Economics will include Professor James Wilen, Professor Kurt Schwabe, Professor Warwick McKibbin, Professor Ross Garnaut, Dr James Horne, Dr Neil Byron and Dr Deborah Peterson.

Hosted by ANU Crawford School of Economics and Government, Environmental Economics Research Hub, Economics and Environment Network, Australian Centre for Biosecurity and Environmental Economics, Centre for Water Economics, Environment and Policy, Centre for Climate Economics and Policy.

Speakers include: Tom Kompas, James Wilen, Michael Ward, Oscar Cacho, Kurt Schwabe, Long Chu, Terry Walshe, Danny Spring, and John Rolfe
