Mohammad Mahfud MD is an Indonesian legal scholar and politician
born in Madura, East Java. Professor Dr Mahfud became a Judge at the
Constitutional Court of Indonesia on 1 April 2008 and the Chief Justice on 19 August 2008. He holds a Masters in Political Science and a Doctorate in Constitutional Law from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Dr Mahfud served as a member of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in the House of Representatives (2004-2008), where he sat on a number
of commissions.

Prior to this, he was the Minister of Justice and Human Rights (2001) in the cabinet of President Megawati Sukarnoputri and the Minister of Defence in the cabinet of President Abdurrahman Wahid (2000-2001). Since 1984, he has also been Professor of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law at the Indonesian Islamic University (UII), Yogyakarta where he teaches political, constitutional and state law, and democracy. In addition, Professor Mahfud teaches in graduate programs at more than 10 other universities.

Dr Tim Lindsey from the Asian Law Centre, University of Melbourne will moderate and chair the Q & A session.
