Abstract:

The Theory of Change (ToC) is a conceptual framework that can be used to determine how change might be created and where efforts should be focused to bring about that change. In this presentation, Melita Grant from the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney will provide an introduction to ToC, explaining its core components and the process of co-developing one. Melita will illustrate the application of ToC through two case studies: one from Cambodia and another that spans multiple countries within the Asia-Pacific region. These examples will highlight the practical implementation of ToC in diverse contexts. Additionally, Melita will share her insights into the benefits of using ToC in international development, including the positive outcomes it has facilitated. She will also discuss the challenges, tensions, and difficulties encountered when using ToC, as well as how it can be adapted to address these issues. The presentation will also explore how ToC fits into the broader context of environmental and development research and practice - including its connections to wider debates in these fields to ensure the relevance of ToC in supporting inclusive and sustainable futures.
