China’s rapid industrialization and economic growth in recent decades has brought great benefits but at enormous environmental cost. Its response to environmental degradation and to carbon emissions in the upcoming international climate change negotiations will be of great importance for both its own people and the rest of the world’s population.

Light lunch will be provided

Speakers:
Prof Stephen Howes -China?s position on climate change, and its role in the global climate change negotiations. Before joining the Crawford School, Stephen Howes was with the World Bank and AusAID. He worked on the Garnaut Review in 2008.

Dr Ligang Song - Challenges and uncertainties in China?s transition towards a low-carbon growth economy. Dr Song is Associate Professor and Director of China Economy and Business Program in Crawford School of Economics and Government

Dr Jane Golley - China?s environment, development and global integration: responsibility for emissions embodied in exports, the ?pollution haven hypothesis? and historical ?real? emissions. Dr Golley is a Senior Lecturer in the China Economy and Business Program in the Crawford School of Economics and Government. Following five years at the School of Economics across the footpath (ANU), and before that eight years of postgraduate study and teaching across the seas (in Oxford).
