Dr de Silva entered parliament in 2010, following a successful career in the private sector as an economist, development banker and entrepreneur. He was hand-picked by the United National Party (UNP) leader and current Sri Lankan Prime Minister Wickremsinghe to enter politics. Dr de Silva has a significant public profile in Sri Lanka as an economic commentator, and was the UNP’s economic spokesperson.
As Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr de Silva has been charged with leading a reorientation of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy towards economic diplomacy.
