Today globalisation is much more complex than just the issues of increased protectionism or anti-globalisation. The Global Financial Crisis and increased inequality in many countries have encouraged the adoption of populist and inward-looking policies. Discontentment has manifested in some surprising results: Brexit, Trump, and possibly more to come. In Indonesia, too, discontentment is manifesting itself through rising protectionism, a rejection of foreign interference in the name nationalism, and economic policies dominated by calls for self-sufficiency. Other issues such as abuse of migrant workers and human trafficking have also shown the other side of globalisation.
In this conference, leading experts will explore key issues around globalisation, nationalism, and sovereignty in modern Indonesia from different perspectives. It will include historical dynamics of Indonesia’s engagement to the global world, the emergence of new nationalism and Indonesia’s stance in the South China Sea, as well as nationalism in practice (with the cases of food sovereignty and resource nationalism) and the impact of and response to globalisation, as well as poverty, inequality and gender issues. The conference will also examine more specific dimensions of globalisation such as migrant workers and human trafficking.
The conference is free of charge
