This seminar will report on a state of knowledge paper produced during the first year of a UK Department for International Development (DFID) funded project on electricity and development. Electricity use, access, and reliability are strongly correlated with economic development but despite large empirical literatures and suggestive case evidence, there are few methodologically strong studies that establish causal effects on an economy-wide basis. What is the best direction forward for research on this topic?

David Stern is a professor in Crawford School of Public Policy. He is an energy and environmental economist, whose research focuses on the role of energy in growth and development and environmental impacts including climate change. He is also interested in research assessment. David is currently the chief investigator for an ARC Discovery Project on ‘Energy Efficiency Innovation, Diffusion and the Rebound Effect’ and is one of six theme leaders for a UK Department for International Development funded project on electricity and economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. He is an associate editor of Ecological Economics and on the editorial boards of Nature Energy and Open Economics. Last year he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

The Crawford School Research Seminar (CSRS) is a forum for scholars from across Crawford School of Public Policy to share their research and receive input from faculty and doctoral candidates on works-in-progress.
