Former High Court judge Michael Kirby, former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, and the Director of the Tax and Transfer Institute, Miranda Stewart, are among the contributors to the new issue of Advance magazine.

The winter issue of Advance – the public policy magazine of Crawford School of Public Policy – is available online and in limited release hard copy at college events.

In the winter issue’s lead articles Fraser calls for Australia to reconsider its alliance with the United States of America, while Kirby says the UN Commission he led into human rights atrocities into North Korea has shone a light on the shocking mistreatment of people in the Asian nation.

Elsewhere in the magazine there are contributions from former Departmental Secretary Don Russell, former Opposition Leader John Hewson, Veronica Taylor, Valerie Braithwaite, Talal Yassine and Renee McKibbin. It also features pieces from ANU students Agnieszka Nelson and Rebecca Mendelsohn.

Writing in the introduction of the magazine, Crawford School Director Professor Tom Kompas said the strength of the contributions reflected the university’s commitment to engaging at every level of the policy process.

“This issue of Advance demonstrates that at Crawford, and at ANU more broadly, contributing to public debate on matters of national importance is a key component of what we do,” he said.
