Ariane Utomo is a social demographer, working in the field of marriage and the family in Indonesia. Her core research and teaching outputs examine how the dynamics of social change relate to attitudes to gender roles, school to work transition, women’s employment, marriage patterns, and the nature of inequalities and social stratification in Indonesia.

Ariane’s recent work focuses on how changing patterns in marriage pairing relate to the broader contexts of development and social change in Indonesia. Drawing upon data from the Indonesian Census series and fieldwork, the research aims to provide the first comprehensive study on coupling behaviour and preferences in Indonesia, detailing comparisons of husbands and wives by the age, education, religion, and ethnicity of each. (Here for a paper on age and education gaps among married couples in Indonesia, and on interethnic marriage.

Ariane joined the Crawford School in 2014, working under an ARC Linkage project on Indonesian Data for Population,Economic, and Social Analysis. In November 2016, she commenced a position as a Research Fellow under an ARC Discovery Project on Ageing in Rural Indonesia led by Professor Peter McDonald. Ariane has worked as a Research Fellow in the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute, ANU (now School of Demography) and as a visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Changing Family in Asia cluster of the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore.
