Kristen Sobeck is a Research Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute (TTPI), at the Australian National University, and an Affiliate with the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. She has published various policy reports on wage and income policies, as well as tax reform. Some of her on-going work focuses on domestic violence, in collaboration with Professor Anne Summers, AO, through a grant awarded by the Paul Ramsay Foundation.
Kristen specializes in the analysis of large-scale administrative microdata to evaluate public policies, particularly employment and tax and transfer policies, and with a view to incorporating a gender lens. She has worked directly with various Australian government departments including the Department of Social Services, the Commonwealth Treasury, and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Prior to joining TTPI, she worked for a decade as an economist at the International Labour Organization (ILO) from its headquarters in Geneva, where she focused on wage and income policies, and at the ILO's country office in Argentina, where her focus was on the informal economy. During her career at the ILO, she worked closely with trade unions, employers' organisations and governments to design and evaluate public policies using administrative and survey data sources.
She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 2007 and holds a Bachelor's degree in economics and French from Smith College and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Geneva. As of March 2025, her doctoral thesis was under examination.
