Tom Westland is primarily an economic historian of Asia and Africa, focusing on long-run structural change and market integration in comparative perspective in land abundant developing economies. He has a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He serves on the editorial board of the East Asia Forum website and contributes to the major research agendas of the East Asian Bureau of Research, especially focusing on questions of economic security, the future of the international trading order, and the future of long-run structural change in Asian economies.

  • Industrialisation in developing Asia (particularly South and Southeast Asia) and
  • The long-run institutional history of Australia's engagement with Asia.
