Politics of sustainable development and mine closure planning at Ok Tedi mine

The Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea is nearing the end of mine life, with closure including Mine Life Extension, by 2025. This thesis argues that the mine’s operator Ok Tedi Mining Limited’s mine closure planning process is guided by principals of social sustainability, rather than it being a secondary concern. By analysing the mine closure, business and development plans of stakeholders in the mine, the research shows that cooperation in the mine closure planning process has grown and deepened since the process commenced in 1999.
