  Successful AusAID Development Research Awards Scheme (ADRAS)

Congratulations to Dr. Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt who was part of a successful ADRAS grand application to AusAID, The project titled 'How can a gender-sensitive approach be applied to Mongolia¹s mineral development path? Applying socio-ecological metrics to evaluate and track livelihood transitions in a nomadic society' is led by the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the University of Queensland. AusAID will provide funding of up to AU$620,597.
 

New AARES President plans membership push

Professor Peter Warr, Head of the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, has been named as the new President of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES).

New academic appointment: Dr Bingqin Li

Warmly welcoming Dr Bingqin Li, Associate Professor in the Policy and Governance Program. Bingqin has a PhD in economics from Nankai University and a PhD in Social Policy from LSE. Bingqin's research interests include:

  • Housing, urbanisation, urban governance, social policy reform, migration.
  • Particular interest in China, in Asia more broadly, and in comparative.
  • Research between countries in Asia and in the West.
 

New academic appointment: Dr Anthony (Tony) Swan

Warmly welcoming Dr Anthony Swan, Research Fellow in the Development Policy Centre. Tony will also lecture in the IDEC program, and is currently directing the IAP program in economics. Tony has worked extensively in the government sector and in a number of economic think-tanks. His PhD in economics is from the ANU.  Tony's research interests include:

  • Economic development
  • Budget analysis and public expenditure tracking
  • Aid effectiveness
  • International trade and multinational production
  • International migration
  • Papua New Guinea and Pacific Island Economies
  • Energy Economics

Achievements by students and PhDs

 

Chinese connections

PhD scholar Alicia Mollaun is to head to China as part of the Student Leadership in International Cooperation project aiming to encourage greater cooperation between Australian and Chinese universities.  Alicia has been chosen as part of a group to head over to China in April for two weeks. While there, she will visit a number of China's top universities from the so-called C9 group of elite institutions. The program is organised by the Group of Eight (Go8) Universities in Australia, with funding from Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

 

Best PhD thesis prize for a Crawford student

Ditya Agung Nurdianto, who recently completed his PhD in the Arndt Corden Department of Economics has recently been awarded the best PhD thesis prize for 2012 by the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES). His thesis is entitled 'A General Equilibrium Perspective on Energy and Environmental Policies in ASEAN.' Warm congratulations to Ditya and to his principal supervisor, Dr Budy Resosudarmo.
