Established in 1965 in response to profound changes in the Indonesian economic and political landscapes, the ANU Indonesia Project has grown from a small group of Indonesia-focused economists into a large interdisciplinary research centre.  We are considered as one of the world’s leading centres for research, policy development and graduate training in the Australia-Indonesia region.  Since 1965 we have produced and disseminated high quality research on the economy and society of Indonesia. Across the region our research is recognized for its ongoing role in informing Indonesian economic and social policy development. Our key areas of research include trade and economic development; agriculture, resources and the environment; governance; social policy and human capital; and gender.

Based in Indonesia and Australia, our work also makes a critical contribution to building the next generation of Indonesianists. Through our graduate education and capacity building activities we have trained some of Indonesia’s leading policy makers including Ministers and senior policy advisers. Our alumni include former Minister of Trade, Dr Mari Pangestu and former Minister of Finance, Dr M Chatib Basri.

Over five decades we have built one of the largest networks of Indonesianists in the world and developed strong people-to-people links between Australia and Indonesia. Our networks include academics, policy experts and decision makers from both Australia and Indonesia. We leverage our networks and share our knowledge and policy expertise to build capacity and increase awareness in the region.

Our goal is to contribute to sustainable and inclusive social development and economic growth through education and research-based public policies in Indonesia.

Our purpose is our partnership role.  We produce high-quality economic/development policy research, education and partnership links that benefit both Indonesia and Australia.

The Project's Australia-Indonesia network is unrivalled - we aim to build the best network of Indonesianists globally, connecting Government with evidence-based policy-making and research.

The Project welcomes distinguished guests from Indonesia, Australia and worldwide throughout the year.  Please contact Dr Arianto Paturnu (arianto.patunru@anu.edu.au) if you would like to plan a policy dialogue or engagement between the ANU Indonesia Project academic network and a visiting Government of Indonesia or Australian department.  Meet some of our recent visitors below.

DG Tax team visit the Project

Suryo Utomo, Director General of Taxes, visited the ANU Indonesia Project in November 2024 for an open dialogue with tax students from the ANU and across other Australian and Indonesian institutions. It was a fantastic opportunity to question Indonesian tax policy, especially the timely policy shifting for a VAT tax increase to 12%, and how this may impact middle-class purchasing power parity.
