Influential forum to examine economic growth in China

20 July 2017

The Chinese economy will be under the microscope as world-leading economists, academics, government officials and policymakers come together for the annual China Update at Crawford School on Friday.

The event will feature a keynote address from the World Bank’s Country Director for China, Mongolia and Korea, Bert Hofman.

This year’s Update explores China’s efforts in searching for new sources of growth given the persistence of economic slowdown in recent years.

The event will feature a special panel on the economic relationship between China and Australia, with ANU Professor Peter Drysdale as well as Professor Yiping Huang and Professor Yao Yang from Peking University.

A closing keynote address will be delivered by Professor Wing Thye Woo from the University of California Davis and chaired by economist and Chair of the China Economy Program Professor Ross Garnaut.

The China Update is hosted by the ANU China Economy Program (CEP), sponsored by Rio Tinto through Rio Tinto-ANU China Partnership. CEP homes to the strongest concentration of research on the Chinese economy outside of China.

The event will also include the launch of the annual China Update Book on Thursday 20 July. The 2017 edition is titled China’s new sources of economic growth (Vol. 2): human capital, innovation and technological change.
