Academy of the Social Sciences elects Crawford’s Professor Ariadne Vromen as Fellow

10 November 2020

Crawford School’s Professor Ariadne Vromen has been recognised with a fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences for her contribution to the advancement of social science knowledge.

Professor Vromen joined the Australia and New Zealand School of Government and Crawford School in February this year as Sir John Bunting Chair of Public Administration and Deputy Dean (Research), playing an important role in the School’s ongoing evolution of research programs aimed at producing more demand-led research in partnership with governments and universities.

The recognition further advances Crawford School’s substantial representation in the Academy.

Professor Vromen said she was excited to join the ranks of ASSA fellows.

“I’m very honoured to become a Fellow of ASSA and to have been recognised in this way by my senior peers across Australia. I am keen to join the Academy that celebrates Australian social science, while also taking its advocacy and influencer role seriously.”

Professor Vromen added that the social sciences have never been more important to the future of society, in Australia and across the world, than they are right now.

“It nearly goes without saying that 2020 has been a challenging year: from climate change fuelled-bushfires, to the pandemic, increasing economic inequality and uncertainty, as well as turbulence across so many democracies.

“It is social science research that needs to describe, analyse, and understand the human impact of these challenges, and work with governments, industry and civil society to create positive social change.”

Alongside her, three other ANU academics are joining ASSA as fellows this year - Professor Hugh White, Emeritus Professor Terence Hull and Professor Jane Simpson.
