20 July 2023

Damcho Thinley is beginning a new chapter by embracing the transformative journey that has moulded him into a passionate advocate, empowering communities through the guiding principles of public policy.

Born and raised in the picturesque district of Gasa, Bhutan, Damcho found solace in nature and developed a profound appreciation for its tranquillity. Drawn by a desire to make a meaningful impact in public service, Damcho pursued a path of knowledge and growth, leading him to the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University.

Damcho’s journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, which equipped him with technical expertise but left him yearning for a deeper understanding of public administration. Recognizing the significance of this knowledge in delivering effective public service, he made the pivotal decision to undertake the Master of Public Administration at Crawford. The program’s comprehensive curriculum, focusing on the Asia Pacific region, resonated with his aspirations to make a difference at both local and global levels.

The challenges and rewards of his experience at Crawford enriched Damcho’s perspective on public service and policy. Initially daunted by the rigorous reading and writing demands, he discovered his inner resilience and potential to excel. “At first, I doubted myself,” he said, “however, soon I was able to cope with the lessons and started to enjoy the learning. I was able to realize my capabilities within and build self-confidence. The Pre-Sessional Program (PSP) and Academic Skills Team were very helpful in guiding me through the process.”

As the world evolves, Damcho acknowledges the vital role of informed citizens in shaping policy decisions. Recognizing that each individual is a crucial policy actor, he believes that imparting knowledge and instilling the right values can empower citizens to drive positive change. The battle against global issues, like climate change, demands collaborative efforts, with younger generations playing a pivotal role in fostering a sustainable future.

Amidst his remarkable journey at Crawford, one experience stands out, his final research project. Guided by Professor Sara Bice and supervised by Dr Hayley Henderson, Damcho delved into the realm of research, gaining valuable insights and honing his analytical skills.

To aspiring students considering Crawford’s Master of Public Administration, Damcho emphasizes: “It is indeed that this course will provide you with knowledge on public administration and public policy. Apart from that, the class activities such as reading, discussion and writing can help you realize your potential and change your perspective. Moreover, the teaching staff are well versed in the content and teaching process. You will also be able to interact with classmates from different backgrounds, share your experience and learn from each other. There is also smooth coordination and management of the program, starting from admission to the graduation ceremony. For me, I didn’t face a single hurdle in receiving services from the University.”
For Damcho, graduation marks not an end but the beginning of a continuous pursuit of knowledge and contribution to society. Armed with critical reading and analytical skills, he envisions a journey of constant learning and meaningful engagement, committed to addressing personal, societal, and global challenges.

With heartfelt gratitude, Damcho thanks his parents, uncle, family, friends, and wife for their unwavering support and encouragement during his studies.

From all of us at Crawford, congratulations Damcho!
