Guide to Selecting a Self-Sourced Internship

Introduction

This brief guide will assist you in finding a self-sourced internship opportunity.

Things to consider:

Timing

Think about how participating in an internship will fit with your other studies. Would you prefer to undertake a part-time internship during the semester or a full-time intensive internship during the semester break.

Internship hours: 80-100 hours, Internship duration: 8-12 weeks

Students intending to complete a self-sourced internship for credit in CRWF8019 should note that initial expressions of interest should be sent to crawford.internships@anu.edu.au at least two months before the intended placement start date.

Students should also be aware that you must adhere to these deadlines when preparing an internship:

Five weeks before internship placement commences – internship application approved

Three weeks before internship placement commences – Assessment task 1: statement of expectations due (CRWF8019)

Two weeks after internship placement ends – Assessment task 2: Reflective Journal due (CRWF8019)

Two weeks after internship placement ends – Assessment task 1: Reflective Statement due (CRWF8020)

Seven weeks after internship placement ends – Assessment task 3: Research Report due (CRWF8019)

Credit Options

If you are interested in seeking credit towards your academic degree you should familiarise yourself with the course requirements for CRWF8019 Public Policy and Professional Internship, and be sure to check in with your program coordinator to ensure you have the elective options available to undertake an internship for credit.

NB: All applications for CRWF8019 must meet a minimum academic requirement of 70 average.

Do Fees Apply?

If you enrol in CRWF8019 fees will apply.

Non-Credit Options

If you are interested in having your internship listed on your academic transcript you should familiarise yourself with the course requirements for CRWF8020 Public Policy Professional Experience, as this is a “0” credit course you will need to seek approval from the Academic Convenor to enrol.

Do Fees Apply?

If you enrol in CRWF8020 fees are not applicable.

Next Steps

Securing an opportunity

Once you have secured your self-sourced internship, you should complete the Application Form (refer to Appendix A) to ascertain what further information you might require or need to submit to the School for approval and assistance.

School assistance

Once you have completed your Application Form, you should contact Crawford Internships to discuss your internship to seek advice on what level of assistance the School can provide you.

Academic approval

It is important to seek academic approval/clearance for the internship if you intend to enrol into CRWF8019 and the Academic Convenor will work with you to determine the assessment requirements and assist you in selection of an academic supervisor for the duration of your internship. If you intend to enrol into CRWF8020 you will also need to seek approval from the Academic Convenor.

Other Considerations

ANU Insurances

Travel

In most instances, the ANU provides travel insurance cover for students undertaking an internship. There are a few requirements to meet, such as you must be an enrolled student at the commencement and completion of your internship. An approval to travel process is required to be completed prior to departure for insurance to be applicable.

Public Liability

In some instances, the ANU provides public liability insurance cover for students undertaking an internship. There are a few requirements to meet, such as you must be an enrolled student at the commencement and completion of your internship.

Visas

If an entry visa is required, you should peruse the requirements and apply prior to finalising your travel and approval arrangements. You are responsible for your own visa and travel arrangements.

Citizenship, Work Permits & Scholarships

Australian citizenship may be required within Australia for certain internship opportunities. It is important that you check details thoroughly when considering opportunities.

It is also important to understand and be aware of your obligations pertaining to your work rights, visa status and scholarship rules when considering an internship opportunity.
