Growing up in the remote Jimi District of Jiwaka Province, Papua New Guinea, Mr Samson Pes’ childhood was rooted in traditional lifestyles, sparking an early passion for education. Encouraged to explore Information Technology in 2005, Mr Pes transitioned into Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Papua New Guinea. His career led him to become the Manager of Information Technology & Labour Market Information Systems at the Department of Labour & Industrial Relations.

In 2017, his focus transitioned to policy development, prompting him to upskill in policy analysis and development. Aided by an Australia Awards Scholarship, Mr Pes pursued a Master of Public Policy at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.

Upon completing his Master’s degree, Mr Pes aspires to become a Senior Policy Advisor, contributing to areas including the labour market, employment, technical and vocational education training, skills development, and labour migration. His motivation lies in making a meaningful impact on both a professional and societal level.

As the ANU First Nation or Pacific Island Scholarship recipient and a first-time attendee at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, UAE, Mr Pes anticipates witnessing global cooperation, innovation and technology transfer, discussions on climate justice, active involvement of youth and civil society, outcome agreements, networking, collaboration, and a significant learning experience.

Mr Pes is deeply committed to addressing climate change in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. His aspirations for COP28 include contributing to international best practices, gaining insights into global perspectives on labour mobility solutions, exploring sustainable economic growth, and learning from seasoned experts. He also hopes to delve into the intersection of labour markets, technology, and sustainability, and establish a valuable network of experts. He envisions that this experience will profoundly shape his future professional pursuits, influencing his approach to policy development, enhancing his expertise in labour mobility, integrating sustainability considerations, and facilitating continuous learning through strategic networking.
