Crawford School of Public Policy

The ANU Crawford School of Public Policy recently hosted two Alumni Dialogue events in Jakarta and Yogyakarta, marking a significant milestone in our long-standing relationship with Indonesia. Both evenings, part of our latest visit to Indonesia, brought together alumni and distinguished guests for insightful discussions and celebrations.

The events underscored the substantial and enduring relationships between the Crawford School and Indonesia. These relationships mirror the important ties between our nations. With more than 500 Indonesian alum, the school continues to welcome new students from Indonesia each year.

Our school is especially proud to host the ANU Indonesia Project, that has been contributing to public policy reform in Indonesia through research, professional development, training, and networking since 1965. Their partnerships with Indonesian universities are a great source of pride for them.

Alumni Dialogue in Jakarta

The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Her Excellency Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance for the Republic of Indonesia.

In her keynote address, Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati shared her insights on the critical public policy questions confronting Indonesia. Her extensive career, including her tenure as Indonesian Finance Minister and former Managing Director of the World Bank Group, provided valuable perspectives on navigating economic challenges.

Following her speech, a panel discussion featured prominent experts including: Professor Mari Pangestu, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, Professor Evi Fitriani, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Mandiri Bank and Professor Dr. Agus Pramusinto, Chair of the Indonesian Civil Service Commission, Faculty of Public Policy and Administration, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The panel discussion, moderated by Professor Shiro Armstrong, delved into various public policy issues facing Indonesia, reflecting on education and continued engagement with the Crawford School. The dialogue was enriched by the diverse experiences and knowledge of the panelists.

Professor Janine O’Flynn, Crawford School Director, expressed her delight at returning to the Crawford School and leading it through its next phase. She highlighted the importance of the Crawford Community and the significant milestone of celebrating 20 years of engagement with Indonesia.

Professor O’Flynn noted, “One of the things that makes us so great is our Crawford Community, including our incredible alumni.”

As the evening came to a close, Professor O’Flynn highlighted the importance of continued collaboration and engagement in addressing the pressing challenges facing Indonesia and the broader region. She also emphasized the achievements of Indonesian graduates, who are excelling in various fields and making significant contributions to their communities and beyond. She expressed admiration for their dedication and impact, which resonate far beyond Indonesia.

Alumni Dialogue in Yogyakarta

The Alumni Dialogue in Yogyakarta was a more intimate event. This special evening brought together alumni and esteemed colleagues from Universitas Gadjah Mada to celebrate the school’s strong ties with Indonesia and its impactful contributions to public policy over the past 20 years.

The event featured an engaging conversation with Dr. Gabriel Lele from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Professor Janine O’Flynn and Dr. Lele discussed the vital intersection of research and policy, highlighting the significant roles their institutions play in shaping public policy.

Dr. Lele, an expert in conflict management and anti-corruption measures, shared insights from his extensive research and professional experience. He reflected on his academic journey at the Crawford School and discussed the evolving landscape of public policy in Indonesia.

The event concluded with a group photo, dinner, and networking session, fostering connections and discussions among alumni and guests. The warmth and enthusiasm shown by the attendees in Yogyakarta reaffirmed the strong bonds between the Crawford School and its Indonesian community.

Speaking of the events, Professor O’Flynn expressed her joy at reconnecting with alumni and colleagues, noting the deep and enduring relationships between the Crawford School and Indonesia. She emphasized the school’s pride in its Indonesian alumni, who have made significant contributions across various sectors, and welcomed the newest students from Indonesia, the school’s largest cohort.
