China: A New Model for Growth and Development
On 11 July 2013, the China Economy Program within the Crawford School, in collaboration with the Rio Tinto–ANU China Partnership, will present the thirteenth China Update. At this annual event, leading academics, policy makers and government representatives discuss the latest research on the Chinese economy. Over the years, the China Update has cemented its status as Australia's premier forum for in-depth discussion and analysis of the Chinese economy.
This year's Update will address the following topics:
- A new model and strategy for long-term growth and development
- China’s industrialization and the transition to a new model
- Green growth in China
- China’s energy policy challenges and climate change practices
The Update will include a special discussion panel on Chinese ODI chaired by Emeritus Professor Peter Drysdale AO and comprised of:
- Dan Rosen (Columbia University and The Rhodium Group)
- Karl Sauvant (Columbia University)
- Yongsheng Zhang (DRC, State Council China)
- Bijun Wang (Peking University)
We are also pleased to announce that the 2013 China Update will be opened by The Hon Richard Marles MP, Australia's Minister for Trade, who will speak about the evolving nature of Australia's relationship with China. This year's closing address will be given by Professor Dwight Perkins, Harold Hitchings Burbank Professor of Political Economy, Harvard University who will speak about new institutions for a new development model.
Other eminent speakers at this year's Update include: Christine Wong (Oxford), Yiping Huang (Peking University and ANU), Xiaolu Wang (National Economy Research Institute) , Rod Tyers (University of Western Australia), Xin Meng (ANU) and Huw McKay (Westpac),
The 2013 China Update will coincide with the launch of China: A New Model for Growth and Development, edited byRoss Garnaut ,Cai Fang and Ligang Song. The book is published by ANU E Press with the Chinese Social Sciences Academic Press publishing the Chinese language version.

China Update Book Launch 2013
On 10 July 2013, the China Economy Program within the Crawford School, in collaboration with the Rio Tinto-ANU China Partnership, will launch the China Update Book: China: A New Model for Growth and Development edited by Ross Garnaut ,Cai Fang and Ligang Song. The book is published by ANU E Press with the Chinese Social Sciences Academic Press publishing the Chinese language version.
This year's book features contributions from the world's leading academics, policy makers and government representatives who discuss the latest research on the Chinese economy. Over the years, the China Update Book has become Australia's premier publication for in-depth discussion and analysis of the Chinese economy.
The 2013 book will be launched by His Excellency Ambassador Chen Yuming, Chinese Ambassador to Australia and will feature an addresses by Professor Ross Garnaut of the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne, as well as David Peever, Managing Director Iron Ore, Rio Tinto. This year's key note speaker is Professor Dwight Perkins, Harvard University.
The Book launch will be an opportunity for the contributors, public servants, academics, students, corporate sector and others to meet and talk in a social setting.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Registration is essential; this event is to be capped at 150 participants.
