Think tanks

Washington D.C is home to nearly 400 think tanks, many of which are internationally renowned in their area of expertise.

Some of the leading think tanks in Washington D.C include the Brookings Institution, Heritage Foundation, Aspen Institute, Centre for American Progress, Council on Foreign Relations, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, RAND Corporation, Cato Institute, the Mansfield Foundation, Peterson Institute for International Economics and the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research.

The majority of these organisations hold regular free public events that fellows are welcome to attend.

A good way to learn about what is going on around town is to keep an eye on DC Link Tank or subscribe to their free weekly newsletter.

Universities

Washington D.C is home to some of the leading universities in the US, including Georgetown University, George Washington University and American University.

These universities often have free public lectures with high-profile public speakers including business and political leaders. Student societies and clubs also organise regular social events and activities for students and are a good resource for fellows to tap into.

Political campaigns

Depending on whether it is an election year or not, there may be lots of political campaigns being organised, with phone banks and campaign offices looking for volunteers. Previous CRFP fellows have worked on political campaigns in their spare time, gaining valuable insight into the US political system.

Community groups

Volunteering in the local community is a unique way to get to know a new country and meet some friendly people. Volunteer work is regularly available working with children, the needy, the elderly, the arts, community and environmental initiatives, and a wide variety of non-profit organisations.

Websites like Volunteer Match or Idealist provide information on volunteering opportunities available.
