This seminar explores UPNG students’ views on key issues affecting Papua New Guinea, highlighting findings from the 2026 Annual Student Opinion Survey.

What do students from UPNG think about important issues affecting their country? For the first time, this year’s UPNG student annual opinion survey included students from all four schools at the Waigani campus.

The survey also explored more than just social issues. Geopolitics, climate change and migration are some of the most talked about topics in the region at present, and the survey explored students’ opinions on these important areas of interest, as well as other areas such as the students’ satisfaction with their lives.

Students’ opinions are important as they reflect the feelings, beliefs and concerns that students hold. Students form a particularly important part of Papua New Guinea’s population. They often go on to important roles once they leave university. Often students end up in government departments, or civil society and even sometimes become politicians. It is important to know what they believe.

There are varying opinions on the different matters explored and this shows the diversity of the sample covered. In this presentation the research team will cover survey responses and explore key themes emerging from the student survey.

Note: this seminar will take place at 1.30pm - 2.30pm Australian Daylight Savings Time and 12.30pm - 1.30pm Port Moresby time.
