The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is an international financial institution that supports projects in 29 countries, from central Europe to central Asia. Investing primarily in private sector clients whose needs cannot be fully met by the market, the EBRD seeks to promote entrepreneurship and foster transition towards open and democratic market economies.

The EBRD was founded in 1991 and is owned by two intergovernmental institutions, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, and 63 countries, including Australia and New Zealand. This broad shareholder base allows the EBRD to bear more risk compared with private commercial banks.

The Hon Bob McMullan is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In this seminar, he will share his experience of the activities and operation of the EBRD and explore the broader issues surrounding the role of the private sector in international development.

After a long and distinguished career in Federal Parliament, Bob McMullan joined the Crawford School of Public Policy as Adjunct Professor in 2010 to pursue his ongoing interest in development and development policy. Professor McMullan is a member of the high-level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing, which was mobilised during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009. His special interest in the welfare of disabled persons in developing countries led him to initiate the World Bank’s Global Partnership for Disability and Development, which was adopted by the GPDD Task Force in 2005.

Between 1996 and 2007 Mr McMullan held a number of Shadow Ministerial positions including Shadow Treasurer, Shadow Minister for Finance and Small Business and Shadow Minister for Federal/State Relations, and after the election of the Rudd Government in November 2007, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance.
