Improving efficiency in aquaculture production can play an important role in satisfying ever-increasing demand for fish products while also enhancing the long-term sustainable use of land and water. Using detailed household- and commune-level data, this study examines the impacts of both location and farm-specific characteristics on the technical efficiency of aquaculture production in Vietnam. Findings reveal that local characteristics are key determinants of efficiency, and that disease control measures have the potential to improve the technical efficiency of Vietnam’s aquaculture industry. The results suggest the need for better aquaculture planning and management.
