Economic cooperation in East Asia reflects the diversity of its members. Ongoing cooperation through ASEAN, APEC and the G20has fostered an expectation of ongoing international cooperation on areas of shared concern and the recent Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) offers a new mechanism to continue to progress cooperation. This paper proposes areas of ongoing negotiation to be considered as case studies when analysing the evolution of cooperation over time. It presents a variety of modes of cooperation and proposes a game theoretic framework to consider the interactions between members within these groups. It aims to understand why and how existing modes of cooperation have worked and what might be most appropriate for emerging circumstances.
