The trade-weighted real exchange rate is often used to measure the size of Dutch-disease effects from a resource boom. An alternative is to measure the ratio of the prices of non-traded and traded goods. This paper discusses the difference between the two approaches and applies the two concepts to the case of Indonesia. Indonesia is an interesting case study because, in the last fifty years, it has experienced two quite different resource booms.
