The Crawford School strengthens ties with Papua New Guinea

27 August 2024

The Crawford School of Public Policy representatives recently embarked on a vibrant series of engagements, further solidifying our enduring partnership with Papua New Guinea (PNG). These efforts were highlighted through two landmark events: the PNG Update 2024 and the Crawford School Alumni Dialogue.

Beyond the high-profile PNG Update and Alumni Dialogue, our academics and school leadership actively engaged in a variety of initiatives, collaborating with the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and other influential institutions.

PNG Update 2024: Securing a stable environment for growth and development

Co-organised by our colleagues at the Development Policy Centre and UPNG, the two-day conference brought together key stakeholders, policy experts, and academics. The Honourable Mr James Marape, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, delivered the opening remarks, setting the tone for the event with his insights on the critical challenges and opportunities facing the nation.

The event served as a vital platform for discussing pressing issues facing PNG, including economic development, governance, and social policy. Supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the conference continues to be a cornerstone of PNG-Australia collaboration, showcasing the impact of shared research and dialogue.

The Crawford School Alumni Dialogue

An unforgettable evening unfolded as we celebrated the achievements of our alumni in PNG. The event was filled with engaging conversations, hearty laughter, and new connections, all set against the backdrop of our shared educational journey. It was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of our programs on the professional lives of our graduates.

We were honoured to have Dr Joanne Loundes, Australian Deputy High Commissioner, and Mr Andrew F. Oaeke, Secretary of the Treasury of PNG, as keynote speakers. Dr Loundes highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between PNG and Australia, underscoring the crucial role of institutions like ANU and UPNG in shaping public policy and future leaders. She praised the collaborative efforts that have bolstered education and research through initiatives like the PNG Update.

Mr Oaeke reflected on the invaluable skills he acquired at the Crawford School, emphasizing how they have been instrumental in his career. He spoke passionately about the importance of strong institutions for economic development and the need to invest in human capital and infrastructure.

Looking ahead

As we reflect on these meaningful interactions, we are already excited for future opportunities to reunite with our alumni and further strengthen our ties with PNG!
