Regional Dynamics in a Decentralized Indonesia

OUTLINE: With its 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic state. Its great economic, social, cultural, ecological and demographic diversity is reflected in its evolving sub-national administrative organisation, which includes the elected leaders and assemblies of more than 500 provinces, districts and municipalities. It has been more than a decade since the nation embarked on two far-reaching, interrelated reforms – democratisation and decentralisation – which have transformed the country’s socio-economic development and political economy.

This Update, from leading international authorities with diverse perspectives, will examine Indonesia’s regional diversity and dynamics in the wake of these reforms. Through a mixture of broad thematic analyses and focused case studies, it will address the following questions: Which have been the dynamic and lagging regions, and why? What has happened to interregional inequality and poverty? How have local-level politics and governance responded to the greater democratic space and resource flows? In what respects have the decentralisation reforms worked well, and what are the remaining challenges? What of the special challenges in the periphery, in Papua and Aceh? And how has decentralisation altered environmental management and migration patterns?
