Program Chairman, Ross Garnaut

Ross Garnaut

Ross Garnaut is Professor Emeritus at University of Melbourne and one of Australia’s most distinguished economists and a noted authority on the Chinese economy, having served as Australian Ambassador to China during 1985 – 1988. He has served in senior roles across academia, business and government and has authored numerous influential publications on international economics, public finance, and economic development, including numerous influential reports to the Australian Government, most notably The Garnaut Climate Change Review. Professor Garnaut is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, a Distinguished Fellow of the Economic Society of Australia, Distinguished Life Member of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society, and an Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Program Director, Yixiao Zhou

Yixiao Zhou

Yixiao Zhou is Associate Professor of Economics at the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics and Director of China Economy Program at Crawford School of Public Policy. Yixiao’s research work focuses on three areas: global macroeconomics, the role of technology and innovation in economic growth, and the Chinese economy. Yixiao also serves as President of the Chinese Economics Society of Australia (CESA) and Editor-in-Chief of Asian-Pacific Economic Literature. Yixiao earned her PhD in Economics from ANU, and her Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science from Peking University. She is passionate about teaching and mentoring students for advanced, cutting-edge and innovative research with policy impact.

Professor Ligang Song

Ligang Song

Ligang Song is Professor of Economics in Arndt-Corden Department of Economics at the Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University. His research interests include international economics, institutional economics, development economics and policy studies, and the Chinese economy. He was the long-serving Director of China Economy Program. Professor Song has been involved in organising the annual China Update conferences at ANU since 1998 and co-editing the China Update book series with ANU Press since 2002 and jointly with Social Sciences Academy Press of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences since 2007.

Current Students

Joel Bowman is a PhD candidate at the Australian National University. His current research is focused on analysing the causes, consequences, and resolution of zombie companies (firms that are unable to meet their debt servicing costs over an extended period). He has previously conducted research on the Chinese economy and financial markets at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Cherie Simpson was a master candidate at the Australian National University. Her current research is focused on developing the theoretical understanding and empirical evidence for the Adaptive Efficiency Framework for economic growth.

Evelyn Chen was a master candidate at the Australian National University. Her current research is focused on measuring returns to infrastructure investment in China.

Taylor Ey was a master candidate at the Australian National University. His research was focused on measuring the role of intangible capital in driving trade patterns.
