Mohammad Mahabub Alam, a Bangladeshi civil servant, is a 4th-year PhD student affiliated with the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at the Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU. His primary research interest lies in fiscal policy and macroeconomics, focusing his thesis on the deficit financing strategy of the Bangladesh government and its macroeconomic and fiscal consequences. Before his PhD studies, Mahabub worked in the Macroeconomic Wing of the Finance Division, Ministry of Finance (MOF), Bangladesh, from March 2017 to June 2021. During his tenure at the Ministry of Finance, he contributed as a member of the program implementation team (PIT) to a project aimed at improving fiscal forecasting through the development of a macroeconomic model under the “Strengthening Public Financial Management program to enable service delivery (SPFMS)” in collaboration with the World Bank from December 2019 to June 2021. He also contributed as a core group member of the Finance Division, MOF to integrate a macroeconomic model into Bangladesh’s Medium Term Macroeconomic Framework (MTMF) in collaboration with the IMF Institute of Capacity Development from February 2020 to June 2021. Additionally, Mahabub served as Assistant Commissioner, Senior Assistant Commissioner, and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Chief Executive Officer in a sub-district) in the district administrations of Bhola, Brahmanbaria, and Rangamati of Bangladesh from November 2008 to March 2017. In these roles, he contributed to improving public order and safety, development administration, revenue administration, and the execution of social safety net programs.
