Our Story

Established in 1965 in response to profound changes in the Indonesian economic and political landscapes, the ANU Indonesia Project has grown from a small group of Indonesia-focused economists into a large interdisciplinary research centre.  We are considered as one of the world’s leading centres for research, policy development and graduate training in the Australia-Indonesia region.  Since 1965 we have produced and disseminated high quality research on the economy and society of Indonesia. Across the region our research is recognized for its ongoing role in informing Indonesian economic and social policy development. Our key areas of research include trade and economic development; agriculture, resources and the environment; governance; social policy and human capital; and gender.

For over six decades we have built one of the largest networks of Indonesianists in the world and developed strong people-to-people links between Australia and Indonesia. Our networks include academics, policy experts and decision makers from both Australia and Indonesia. We leverage our networks and share our knowledge and policy expertise to build capacity and increase awareness in the region.
