Challenge:

Land uses across Australia are changing as the climate shifts. Some agricultural and pastoral activities are now practiced some hundreds of km from where they were in decades past. Other climate drivers such as changes in rainfall patterns are seeing further shifts in the spatial distribution of agricultural practices. These land use changes also affect the habitat of native plants and animals and planning is done to provide corridors for these transitions.

Proposition:

This module will be an opportunity to engage in the science and the policy discussion about this issue that will affect the lives, and livelihoods, of every Australian. Questions that will be posed include: Where does this leave us in the years to come? What are potential strategies to consider in response? What does Indigenous knowledge teach us in this regard?

Learning outcomes:

• Enhanced understanding of the impact of climate change on land use changes
• Experience in considering a significant economic, social and environmental issue at multiple temporal and spatial scales
• Ability to identify potential solutions for this and other related issues
